What the drive is like
Three and a half hours, and the landscape changes completely twice. You leave the coast at Neum, follow the Neretva upstream through the canyon, and arrive in a city where the call to prayer and church bells overlap.
The driver drops you at the edge of the old bazaar, because cars do not go in. Two to three hours is enough for the bridge, the Koski Mehmed Pasha mosque and lunch on a terrace over the river.
Bring a passport or ID. This is a border crossing, and in season the queue at Nova Sela can add half an hour. We watch the traffic and choose the crossing on the day.
